“A Matter of Time” was a beautiful album that featured some newer sounds other than jazz.
The high point is definitely the beginning of the album. All of the songs that were put out as singles before the album was even released were very good. My favorite songs from the album are “Clockwork”, “Carousel”, and “Forget-Me-Not”.
Before listening, I expected it to sound similar to her previous album “Bewitched” and I expected to see some collaborations. Some of the songs, like “Clockwork” and “Forget-Me-Not,” can be directly compared to songs from her previous albums, while others feature a new sound or genre. The songs that differed from Laufey’s usual jazzy sound really did surprise me, as I expected everything to sound mostly the same as her older albums.
Laufey has said it was an album she really enjoyed making. Most of the songs were written based on her own life experiences and inspired by artists she looks up to.
I think in five to ten years, the album will be seen as one of the many works that define the 2020s. I think Laufey wants listeners to take away some life lessons from this album. Especially fans that are younger than she is.
The low point comes toward the end where Laufey experiments with different genres. The songs were not terrible, but they just didn’t mix well with the rest of the album. “Clean Air,” which sounded like a folk song, is my least favorite song on the album for this reason.
When it comes to one of the songs, “Castle in Hollywood”, that was supposedly inspired by Taylor Swift’s songwriting style, I didn’t like it because I’m not a fan of her music style.
“A Matter of Time” has definitely gotten its flowers from the critical world. During the 2026 Grammys, Laufey was awarded “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album”. This would be her second Grammy win overall.
