Many people view immigration as a problem. However, immigration is a beneficial part of American society. Immigrants contribute to the culture, society, and economics of the US.
One way that immigrants benefit society and the economics of the US is through the expansion of the work force. In the US, labor shortage is an issue that is persistent in today’s America. This is due to a demographic switch from generation to generation. With Boomers being retirement age and young people not typically working in trade, immigrants contribute to the demographic balance of the work force.
Many claim that immigrants take away jobs from US citizens but they are making a positive impact on the work force because they are willing to work jobs that people don’t necessarily want. This shows that they are stimulating the economy through their positive impact on the job market.
Immigrants also often contribute more to taxes than they claim in services. Research shows that this is true for both legal and undocumented immigrants. NBC reported that from 1994 to 2023 immigrants had paid more in taxes than they received in benefits each year. This is a clear example that immigrants contribute to a positive economic impact. Without immigrants’ tax contributions the national debt would be much higher than it currently is. Oppositions to immigration argue that they receive our benefits in the US without paying taxes which is clearly not a sound argument.
The inclusion of immigrants in American society allows for our communities to be diverse. Especially in an urban city like Everett, there is a large immigrant population. This introduces our students to different cultures. Being exposed to different cultures makes the population resilient and aware. Everett’s young people are able to adapt and break away from stereotypes thanks to its diverse population.
Everett is home to many food establishments from many different cultures, such as Oliveria’s Brazilian Steak Houses, Andrea’s Taqueria, and many Greek pizzerias. Having restaurants with a variety of different foods throughout the city contributes to the multicultural community that is Everett.
Immigrants are active and appreciated members of my community. It is vital that the government makes it easier for immigrants to become citizens. Using legislation and politicians to create a better system. The government needs to take steps towards this process, but the American people also need to combat prejudice and hate within themselves. The United States as a whole is a melting point of cultures. The Greater Boston area is a great example of that. As people it is important to be accepting of other individuals who come from different places to have access to new opportunities.
