The Everett School Committee met for a regular meeting on April 6. The meeting was declared a quorum at 6:35 pm. All members were present, with the exception of Joseph D’Onofrio and Jeanne Christiano. Nobody participated in public comment that evening. After public comment was closed, I gave my report as the student representative.
I gave a quick summary of the sporting events taking place for EHS students, then I updated the committee of the music and art events at EHS this week. I also explained the fundraisers that the junior and senior class were hosting. Then I discussed the Day On The Hill event hosted by MASC that myself and a few members of the school committee had the honor of attending. To finish off my report I gave an update of some happenings in the K-8 buildings before wishing the assistant principals of EPS a happy assistant principals week and thanking them for all of their hard work.
After my report the committee suspended their rules and took the points of roman numeral VI out of order. The Parlin school was invited to speak last night as apar of the report of the superintendent. This is one of the many schools that have attended the school committee to spotlight their work this year. 14 8th graders from the Parlin school spoke of how they empower their school community as student council ambassadors.
After that Superintendent Hart gave his update. He first updated the school committee of attendance rates. He stated that EPS has a 92.3 % attendance rate across the district. He also introduced his plan for a Strategic Planning Initiative. This initiative would bring the internal and external community together in order to guide administration on a path that aligns with the community’s wants and needs. “We want to hear what you think is important in an urban school district,” said the Superintendent. Millie Cardello shared excitement about this program.
Mr. Hart then shared that the district would be receiving a $329,000 grant from the governor’s office. This money will go to high quality instructional materials, including professional development for teachers. He also spoke of the CTE PAC meeting, which brings business leaders in the community to the school for students to interact with. Overall, the superintendent spoke very highly of the students of the Everett Public Schools and their many achievements over the past month.
The meeting was kept pretty short last night. There were no items submitted by committee members for discussion and the readings of the subcommittee reports were waived. After the school committee paid bills and payroll there was no new or unfinished business for discussion. The meeting was adjourned at 7:29pm.
