Cheating has become normalized. It is widely talked about.
For decades teachers already struggled with catching notes passed around with answers, but now they have to look out for AI. With this new method of cheating that is easier and quicker, cheating has grown and become a way that students write essays and answer questions.
You may know people that have cheated on a test, quiz, homework. With AI this cheating epidemic has become bigger with easier access.
“I’ve seen students cheat using AI by copy pasting problems into AI chats,” freshman Bridget Elias Mendez said. “Whether that’s ChatGPT, SnapchatAI, or MetaAI. Then they copy and paste the answer that it gave them.”
The school and teachers have started to take precautions to prevent cheating and the use of AI. Teachers have started using websites and apps to detect use of AI in assignments, tests, quizzes and essays.
Many people have seen or experienced the change in their assignments or in the grading process because of the precautions being taken because of AI.
“My biology teacher doesn’t let us use our phones during the test and she doesn’t let us take retakes,” freshman Elouise Da Silva said.
“I’ve noticed that teachers are making their questions and answers original and not something copied off of a website,” Elias Mendez said. “This way if any students go to search up the answers to any problem they can’t find them.”
“Locked browsers, paper tests, and the classic teacher death stare when you glance sideways. Oh, and seating charts. Nothing says ‘I don’t trust you’ like forced alphabetical order,“ teacher Samuel Miranda said.
There can be many negative academic outcomes of using AI that students don’t realize when they use it. This can branch out and students can gain a habit of using AI and carry it out into their lives outside of high school like their colleges or jobs.
“There’s programs that tell you if it’s AI or not. You’re better off doing work on your own since if they catch you cheating at higher education, they’ll be able to kick you out,” vice principal John Sutera said.
Is cheating and AI taking over our school lives? Will you let it take over yours? These are questions that we can ask ourselves before cheating and turning to AI to respond to a question or to write an essay.
